American Express has always been a pioneer. Many people probably do not realize that American Express is very different from every other finance company that provides consumer credit. This is because, for the most part, they do not provide consumer credit. The American Express card is not a credit card, like Mastercard or Visa cards. The AMEX card is a charge card, allowing consumers to charge to their account and pay the balance in full, at the end of the month. Consumers do not pay to use the card, merchants do. Merchants pay heavily to accept the American Express card. Where they pay a nominal discount rate to Mastercard and Visa, they pay a much higher amount, usually two to three times the amount paid to M/C and Visa, to accept AMEX charges.

But, American Express has really been a pioneer in the field of customer service. AMEX has always been known as a company that stands behind their customers. They have long been known as a company that will go to bat for their customers. This is where most companies fall short and where American Express shines.
